This report is the result of research by WaterAid in Ethiopia into the effects of poor WASH access on children. It focuses on children up to age 14 in Konso and Hintallo in Ethiopia.
- Poor WASH provision affects the care children receive, as caregivers are burdened with walking long distances to collect water.
- At the community level, poor WASH provision jeopardizes children's health, care by caregivers, physical well being, leisure and play time, safety, and the economic stability of caregivers.
- At the school level, poor WASH affects girls in particular, but overall student attendance and learning are impacted. Teachers are also less incentivized to remain at schools without water or toilets.
- After implementing the school WASH project, the number of female students increase by around 50 percent and the dropout rate was reduced by 22 percent.
